Top 20 Most Dangerous Drugs

By AbdurRahman - Posted on 03 April 2008

Which drug is more dangerous, LSD or cigarettes? Is alcohol worse than ecstasy? What about hashish or marijuana?

In the highly acclaimed science series, BBC Horizon, David Nutt head of the Psychopharmacology at the University of Bristol, leads a group of other scientists in ranking the top 20 most dangerous drugs by purely scientific means using the following criteria:

  • Physical/mental harm to the individual using the drug, e.g. memory loss, long term tissue damage to various organs, toxicity, psychosis, cancer, death, etc.
  • The level of physical/mental addiction its use stimulates
  • The negative impact of the drug on society as a whole, i.e. crime, violence, traffic accidents, etc.

The results are shocking. Take a look at this 50 minute documentary: Is alcohol worse than ecstasy? which was aired on Tuesday 5th February 2008, 9pm, BBC Two.
